What Others Have Said About Sequential Spelling:

Cathy Duffy:

Sequential Spelling is a uniquely constructed spelling system that was originally created to help dyslexic students and others with learning difficulties. However, the program has also proved useful with other students as well.

The program incorporates four key features that reflect Sequential Spelling's unusual methodology:

  • Words are taught in relationship to one another, both horizontally and vertically
  • Children can figure out the rules for themselves from their relationships and commonalities, but spelling rules are not taught
  • Students begin by "testing" themselves by trying to write words correctly before they study them
  • Words for each grade level are selected for common elements rather than grade level appropriateness

Melanie C.:

Dear Customer Support,

I have used Sequential Spelling as our exclusive spelling program in homeschooling my 4 children. My oldest is 12 years old and about to finish book 7. He didn't start out as a very good speller, which was compounded by the fact that his vocabulary grew exponentially thanks to his love of reading and my insistence on his reading classic literature. Checking his English papers was interesting when his vocabulary had outpaced his spelling ability. Obviously we've stuck with the program, and his spelling has improved dramatically. I realize that book 7 is the last book in the series, but I recently discovered that there is a book for adults. In looking at the pdh sample, it doesn't seem that the words are as intricate as the ones in book 7, so my question is, is there still value in having him work in the adult book over the next year or so? I'm a little hesitant to say that at 12 years old he's completed his spelling program, but professional guidance would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Melanie

The Curriculum Choice:

Most spelling curricula focus on typical age ability and memorizing lists. Though there may be rules presented, these lists never really give a complete understanding of the regular patterns seen in the English language. In contrast, Sequential Spelling begins with the basis of the words, adds consonants to them making word families, then adds prefixes and suffixes. So your child sees right away how to build complex words and can immediately apply them to his writing. If your child struggles with spelling rules this is one curriculum that can offer a different strategy.

What we really like about this program is that there is no studying required and that lessons can be completed quickly {approx. 20 min}. My youngest child has always disliked the spelling exceptions within the English language. This curriculum took the “hair pulling” out of our day. It’s simple and repetitive approach made sense to my learner, so there was no struggle. He knew what was expected from the repetitive method which took out the stress of being tested each week.
