About Us

The story behind Sequential Spelling and the people who believe in it.

What We Believe

We do not believe there is just one way to teach any topic, including spelling. Children deserve to learn in the way that is easiest and most comfortable for them. The education of the young should never focus on the adults' goals or convenience, but on the needs and abilities of the children.

The History of Wave 3 Learning

Founded June 2010

Wave 3 Learning, Inc. was founded in June of 2010 to carry forward the long record of success achieved with Sequential Spelling and to transition the curriculum into the 21st century. We see ourselves in the context of a rapidly changing educational universe characterised by a much broader range of opportunities than before. A learning challenge is no longer a sentence to a lifetime of constrained life choices, but just another attribute of our children's growth and development that can be remedied with care and effort.

We hope to help bring the best of institutional education and the best of home education together in one child-centric format, dedicated to the advancement of the children's educational needs. This is "Wave 3" that we foresee.

1
Wave 1 — Home & Church Education

From the dawn of time through about 1850, education was almost entirely home-based. Children learned useful skills from parents and relatives. The State took no part in the education of the vast majority of children. Formal schooling was generally church-supported and limited to a small portion of the population.

Wave 2 — Universal State Education

Beginning with community-funded "common schools" in the eighteenth century, the concept of free universal education spread rapidly after the political upheavals of 1848. State-funded schooling forged national identities, drove literacy to new heights, and built the scientific and industrial knowledge base of the modern world — but at the cost of local and family autonomy over how children were taught.

Wave 3 — Child-Centric Hybrid Education

The third wave began as an act of rebellion. Parents of faith, parents of children with learning differences, and parents who feared the disintegrating cultural consensus began — first quietly, then openly — to reclaim the right to direct their children's education. Home schooling re-emerged in the 1970s and 80s, became legal in all fifty states before the century ended, and continues to grow. Wave 3 Learning exists to integrate the best of institutional expertise with the personalised focus of home education — making excellent, child-centred learning accessible to every family.
